Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya...

Lighting the lamp of true knowledge to dispel darkness of ignorance looming large on our minds is the need of the day. `Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya’ (Lead me from darkness unto light); so prays the devotee to God. The prayer mantras seeking light are recited in broad daylight. Does one pray for light of the day during daytime when sun is shining bright? Certainly not. Without emphasizing the obvious we may say that it is the inner darkness that needs to be dispelled.

Every creation big or small is there for a purpose and is helpful in maintaining the precarious balance in nature. Our greed and desire has wreaked havoc and made us face different complications like extinction of species. Economic development has proved to be an Icarian flight for us; the wax wings have now begun melting. Icarus is destined to fall and die. More our wants are, the more complicated our lives are, requiring set up of more industries, more production to meet our needs, more pollution not only of environment but also of consciousness. Attacked by all kinds of miseries, where do we go? What do we do?

Our desire and greed has blinded us to the path of destruction that we are creating for ourselves. We have become insensitive to our own surroundings. The mad race for comfort and better lifestyle is slowly leading to an inevitable ruin of all civilisations. In the name of modernization we have been utilising all the resources that are necessary for life itself. From darkness to electric lights, from no phones to cell phones, from bullock-carts to the age of world-connected flights, yes, we have travelled a long way, we have made communication so much more better, but the knowledge is incomplete. We are still slaves of our desires and demands. Somewhere down the line, we have lost our sensitiveness to our fellow beings and our ability to think analytically before acting. How does a human being come out of the darkness and proceed towards light to lead a meaningful life? The ignorance definitely lies within. Today’s education cannot eradicate our inner darkness though some of it gives us insight to the condition we have created for ourselves. The action, however is left to us and till the moment we realise this we will not be able to come out of the darkness that persists even today, even in the day of modernisation and urbanisation. The dark age is literally over, but has the darkness of the mind been erased yet?

This world has lost its glory
Let us write a brand new story now…
